Kuper Island, the Native Indian reservation for the Penelakut tribe, is to the left. Left of center is 'the cut,'
a dredged channel between the islands that dries at low tide and is two
meters deep at high tide. If they are careful, small powerboats can transit the cut at high tide. We did it
in the dinghy and cleared all the rocks. Half way through,
is a sign advertising "Cinnamon Rolls." Stop, place your order with the local baker and pick up your fresh rolls the next morning.
To the right is Thetis Island which connects by ferry to Chemainus ... and the murals

This life size sculpture of a Native girl was located in front of a drugstore, and was part of the 'mural' program.
Before Chemainus existed, nomadic tribes migrated about the Northwest with their few possessions to
wherever there was good climate and bountiful food. Now government subsidized and isolated by water, they live on
small Kuper Island and ride the ferry to Chemainus for food

An ice cream store mural of Billie Thomas, the first wihite settler in Chemainus.
Billie, born in 1874, died at 102 years.
