The Union Steamship Marina buildings house a small chandlery, a coin laundry, showers, pub and restaurant.

For "Love of Liberty" to stay here it was $39.60 CDN ($26.41 US). A few yards further inland is the small town

which seems very safe. After five days here I have not seen the RCMP even once.

The local bus driver, Peter, takes the bus's coin box home at night. He sorts the bus fares and tokens

on his kitchen table. Then he takes the fare total to the local market and gets a cashier's

check which he deposits in his personal account. Monthly, the sum is then given to the transit authority in Vancouver.

I met a pilot of one of these DeHavilland float planes. Besides flying virtually

everyday in these crummy conditions, they land, water taxi and dodge their way through

marinas and anchorages full of boats to get to their mooring float, usually at the far end of the harbor.

They kill the engine when they're about 25 feet away and the plane's momentum carries it barely to the float.

The pilot opens the door, steps to the aircraft's aluminum landing float, picks

up the mooring line (permanently attached to the airplane) and steps casually to the wooden float

to secure the aircraft. The passengers then step ashore.
