Nanaimo's (north Gulf Islands, British Columbia) waterfront has been exquisitely restored with this promenade. A bagpiper regularly walked

this site where there are coffee shops, ice cream stores, restaurants and the inevitable 'boutiques.' Under the ramp

was the otter attraction: three otters ate starfish and rested in the sunshine on a special piece of carpet nailed

to the dock. In the park which is just past the dome-like building, the local symphony orchestra played the William Tell

Overture and Tchaikovsky's '1812' Overture which ended with cannon fire from the town's guard tower.

Nanaimo hosted a gathering of small steam powered launches of which this was a particularly fine example.

The boilers burned wood, oil or propane. Steam engines like this run very quietly, but all of these had steam

whistles that people encouraged the owners to blast regularly. All day they paraded about the harbor

puffing smoke from the wood fire in the boiler.

Bold and brave dock otters like these characters will board your boat and steal what they can.

Several boats have pets aboard. The owners leave the pet's food out in the boat's cockpit, and when they're not looking ......
